International Land Rover Style Changes
The infamous Land Rover has undergone some dramatic changes in style over the years. Like any vehicle, new innovations and engineering techniques have allowed these vehicles to evolve into an extremely popular, sporty type of SUV today. World War II Willy Jeeps were pretty much the precursor to the modern day Land Rover. The year 1948 produced the first all terrain utility Land Rover by the Wilks brothers. It was built as a lightweight rustproof proprietary out of a metal alloy better known as Birmabright. This type of aluminum was used in these early vehicles because World War II had led to a steel shortage, but there was plenty of aluminum from aircrafts. Early models had great resistance to corrosion elements, and this helped the vehicle gain instant popularity among the general masses. Many of the early style Land Rovers had borrowed parts, but when it came to actual production, British parts were used.
By 1958 the Series II Land Rover was introduced. Designed by David Bache, wheelbases on the Series II were 88 and 109 feet. The engines in these vehicles were also improved, and off-road driving became a more viable option with these vehicles. By 1970, the Range Rover was introduced. Styles changed with this particular vehicle in several ways. Numerous 6X6 models were designed, and these vehicles were also useful as a base model for emergency type vehicles, such as ambulances. The 101 Land Rover styles were also developed in the early 70's and were used for military and emergency vehicle transportation. The 80's brought about different style vehicles such as the 110 and the 90, but it was not until 1989 when the Discovery was developed that the Land Rover really became popular. This 4X4 vehicle offered a smooth ride, and a luxurious, spacious interior. The 300 TDi which hit the streets in 1994 was not quite the success it had intended to be. It appeared that engines in these vehicles had problems with the belts, especially the timing belt. Land Rover had to turn things around, so in 1998 the Series II Discovery was launched. Changes in style compared to earlier models include color, instrumentation, an anti-lock braking system, along with airbags and belt tensioners.
Land Rover continued its success when it came out with The Freelander. Considered one of the best selling Land Rover vehicles, The Freelander was originally designed for drivers wanting to hit lighter off-road conditions, but the vehicle is used on-road for the most part.
